Description:

Southeast Asia, Philippines, northern Luzon, Igorot tribe, ca. mid-20th century CE. A forged-steel axe blade of a rectangular form with a sharpened frontal edge and a projecting spike on the verso. The slender tang is secured within a steel jacket that wraps around the top half of the wooden handle, and the handle base is capped with a hammered brass sheet. Axes like this example were used by hunters to take the heads of their enemies. Size: 9.75" W x 16.5" H (24.8 cm x 41.9 cm)
