Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Ramu River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fascinating ancestral figure with the features of a hornbill bird, hand-carved from hardwood, with a characteristically abstract presentation. This intriguing figure, known as a "kandimboang," has typical anthropomorphic features - such as delineated legs, sinuous arms, and a bulbous posterior - which are emphasized by striking avian features like narrow ovoid eyes slanted inward and an enormous curved beak with a high central crest. The dark-brown coloration is characeristic of charming Papua New Guinea carvings. Finally, a lovely three-tiered finial sits atop the oversized, bird-like visage. Size: 3.375" W x 14" H (8.6 cm x 35.6 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired 1980s-1990s
