Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Ramu River region, ca. mid 20th century CE. A tall standing zoomorphic figure, hand-carved from hardwood, with a characteristically abstract presentation. This anthropomorphic figure, known as a "kandimboang," has typical anthropomorphic features - such as delineated legs, sinuous arms, a leather loincloth, and wide hips - which are emphasized by striking avian features like narrow ovoid eyes, feathered ornamentation, and an enormous curved beak. A tuft of wispy feathers plumes from atop the figure's head, and dark-brown coloration gives the figure the character and charm consistent with tribal Papua New Guinea. Custom wooden display stand included. Size (figure): 12" H (30.5 cm); size (figure with feathers): 18" H (45.7 cm); 13.75" H (34.9 cm) on included custom stand.
