Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, Chambri Lakes area, Aibom peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-built clay storage vessel of a round-bottomed form with a tapering body depicting a highly-stylized avian head beneath a thick, flared rim. The bird presents with a slender beak, plug-shaped eyes inset with small shells, and perky ears, all detailed in thick white pigment with shades of yellow and black on top. Vessels like this example are typically used to store flour made from the sago palm. Size: 3.5" W x 6.9" H (8.9 cm x 17.5 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
