Description:

North America, Mexico, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fascinating and sizable example of a hand-carved wooden helmet mask depicting the head of a jaguar. The fearsome feline presents with polychrome spots atop a bright yellow ground and has a lengthy, black-striped nose, downcast eyes above openwork eye slits, a pair of perky, tab-shaped ears, and a gaping maw filled with serrated, white-painted teeth. Tufts of brown and white horsehair project from around the cat's countenance and imbue the mask with a somewhat naturalistic presentation. An attractive and wearable mask! Size: 9.75" W x 16.1" H (24.8 cm x 40.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired October 15, 2010; ex Haig's of Rochester, Rochester, Michigan, USA
