Africa, Mali, ca. mid 20th century CE. A very large mud cloth (called bogolan) presenting fabulous abstract geometric patterns in chocolate brown and beige. Mud cloth is one of Africa's most unique types of textiles. To create a bogolan, narrow strips of handwoven cotton cloth are skillfully stitched together into a larger cloth. Next, the cloth is hand-painted with patterns and symbols using natural dyes, including dyes made from river mud aged up to one year. A fabulous example! Size: 59.5" L x 34" W (151.1 cm x 86.4 cm)
