Description:

West Africa, Mali, Bozo peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden mask representing the spirit of a bush animal, either a gazelle or a goat indicated by the huge pair of curling horns. The head, ovoid ears, and jaw are articulated and move via a trio of attached strings while being supported by a central wooden handle. The head and horns are painted with thick layers of white, red, and green pigment, and exposed areas of unpainted wood add an orange-yellow hue to the composition. Mask examples like this are used in community-held performances known as "Sogo Bo" theater. Size: 17.5" W x 22.5" H (44.4 cm x 57.2 cm).
