Description:

East Asia, Japan, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine example of a katana made for display purposes. The lengthy handle (tsuka) is wrapped with stingray skin (same) and cotton straps (tsuka-ito) and topped with a brass cap (kashira). The circular hand guard (maru gata tsuba) boasts an openwork presentation with painted hues of green and golden-yellow. The shobu-zukuri carbon-steel blade has a deep groove along the upper shoulder (shinogiji) and a lightly-curved (chu-kissaki) tip. The red-painted wooden scabbard (saya) is adorned with a carbon-steel grip that is further embellished with vivid pigmentation. Size: 43" L x 3.2" W (109.2 x 8.1 cm); size (blade): 28.6" L (72.6 cm).

  • Condition: Handle cap is removable, and steel scabbard grip is loose. Minor nicks and abrasions to blade and scabbard, loosening to cotton handle wraps, fading to original pigmentation, and softening to some finer details. Nice patina throughout.
