Description:

East Asia, Japan, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine carved wooden mask depicting a male face with a heavily furrowed brow, bulging eyes, a prominent nose with delineated nostrils, and full red-painted lips outlined in black pigment. The mask is covered in a pale-yellow pigment atop which additional embellishments in white, black, red, orange, and brown pigment are presented. Tufts of animal hair are pinned to the face to form the bushy eye brows, side burns, and mustache. Size: 5.8" W x 7.7" H (14.7 cm x 19.6 cm).
