Description:

Native American, Pacific Northwest Coast, Canada, British Columbia, Haida Gwaii, Haida peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine pair of hand-carved wooden paddles meant to adorn a model canoe. Each paddle has a petaloid oar head, a gently corseted handle, and a T-shaped hand bar on top. The faces of each paddle blade are embellished with maroon-hued pigment that creates a stylized killer whale face with a singular central eye. Full-sized paddles are used in ceremonial Haida dances, and models like these are intended to show the traditional forms of Haida marine tools. Size of largest: 17.4" L x 2" W (44.2 cm x 5.1 cm)
