Description:

New World, Guatemala, ca. mid 20th century CE. A lovely festival mask, hand-carved from a single piece of hard wood, depicting an amusing reptile atop an expressive anthropomorphic visage. The lizard is depicted with a petite head, sinuous limbs, and a lengthy tail, all detailed in hues of emerald, maroon, pearl, citrine, and jet black. The face beneath has a large pair of almond-shaped eyes, tall flushed cheeks, and an extended bottom lip, all presented in fleshy tones with areas of crimson, jet black, periwinkle, and pearly white detailing. Two slit-form eye holes are carved just above the eyes, and a pair of perforations along the brow allow for suspension. A lovely example! Size: 5.75" W x 8.875" H (14.6 cm x 22.5 cm).
