Description:

New World, Guatemala, ca. mid 20th century CE. A striking hand-carved wooden mask, brightly painted, depicting a hybrid creature presenting a human face that is intriguingly at once young and old with a zoomorphic body. The expressive visage presents large, generously lashed blue eyes, well-manicured black brows followed by a pair of thick, curled white-grey ones, an upturned petite nose, red frowning lips, all upon a rosy pink complexion. The black body has four feline legs (perhaps belonging to a leopard given the yellow with black spots), two eye holes for the wearer, and a curled multicolored tail (red, yellow, and black). A fascinating mask created for a traditional dance and/or parade. Size: 8.25" W x 14.25" H (21 cm x 36.2 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired over the last twenty years
