Description:

West Africa, Mali, Dogon people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A fine carved-wood figure of a nude woman shown standing atop two attenuated legs. The lovely figure features an hourglass form with wide hips, pointed breasts, short arms, incised fingers, and a bulbous pelvic area with clearly delineated genitalia. Supported by an elongated neck, her ovoid visage features a heavy brow, a lengthy nasal bridge, a slender nose with a horizontal drill hole for suspending ornaments, and an incised mouth. An arch, representing her coiffure, caps her head, and is embellished with two fiber knots at each end, perhaps intended as ear adornments. Incised vertical lines decorate her stylized face, representing face paint or ceremonial scarification. Size: 4.875" W x 20.75" H (12.4 cm x 52.7 cm); 21.5" H (54.6 cm) on included custom stand.
