West Africa, Ivory Coast, Baule, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved and painted wooden mask depicting an abstract buffalo head of a discoid shape with a highly stylized visage comprised of openwork triangular eyes with conical protrusions above, and a petite concave mouth, this face below a pair of curved horns. All is painted in an attractive black and creamy white palette. This type of mask, also known as a Bonu Amwin, is associated with the Goli festival which dates back to around 1900 and was created to celebrate new crops, periods of mourning, or visits from dignitaries. Size: 7.75" W x 15.25" H (19.7 cm x 38.7 cm)
