Description:

Oceania, Australia, Aboriginal culture, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden didgeridoo of a lightly-curved tubular form, with rounded edges along the mouthpiece and tone hole, and wine-hued pigment forming the chromatic ground. The midsection of the instrument is decorated with applied pigmentation in black, white, yellow, purple, and red hues and form an intricate serpent with rectangular body segments filled with broad crosshatch motifs. The didgeridoo is an extremely old instrument which is capable of producing droning tones as well as mimicking certain native species, and cave art around Northern Australia suggests instruments like this example were regularly used around 1,500 years ago.
