Description:

Oceania, Australia, Aboriginal peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. An interesting hand-carved wooden "woomera" (literally "spear thrower") of an elongated form with lightly-convex faces and a shallow groove on either side of the red-painted handle. The body is decorated with dense incised linear motifs, with one side bearing a pair of thick serpents facing opposite directions, and the other with one enormous snake exhibiting a segmented body. The upper tip of the thrower has a semicircular groove within wrapped reeds which secures the spear before being thrown. Size: 1.5" W x 21.9" H (3.8 cm x 55.6 cm); 23" H (58.4 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Small nicks to some incised details and loosening to some wrapped reeds along top, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within some incised areas, and nice traces of original pigmentation throughout.
