Description:

Western Africa, Ghana, Asante peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden figure standing atop an integral rectangular platform with delineated legs and a rounded torso. The yellow-painted figure holds a large symbolic stool above the spherical head and elongated, ring-adorned neck, and the sides are held aloft by bent arms. Stools in Asante culture traditionally reflect the status of individuals and were typically reserved for chiefs and other elites. Oftentimes the stools were never actually sat upon but rather displayed as impressive regalia. This figure is perhaps holding the stool above their head to display the prestige of the ruler which they attend. Size: 3.3" W x 7.9" H (8.4 cm x 20.1 cm).

Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired prior to 1970
