Description:

**Originally Listed At $200**

West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden spoon with a finely-detailed face handle, perhaps representative of an ancestor. The spoon has a "bullseye" backside with concentric rings in alternating hues of black and white. The spoon portion has a recessed cavity colored with a powder-white pigment, hence the name "chalk spoon," with a scalloped edge embellished with each lobe displaying alternating black and burgundy pigments. A thick, integral handle conjoins both scoop and ancestor head, and a parabolic metal bar atop the head is used for suspension. Size: 12.75" H (32.4 cm).

Provenance: ex-Nick Poolos collection, Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA acquired before 1970
