Description:

Australia, Aboriginal people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A tall, polished wooden object known as a tjurunga (sometimes churinga) presenting with an elongated ovoid form. The surface is decorated on one side with skillfully incised striated, geometric motifs. Dark red pigment colors the surface. The wood is lightly ridged, probably eucalyptus. This is one of a class of objects considered to have religious power by the Arrernte, a group of aboriginal people who live in Central Australia, used in various ceremonies, their ownership and handling limited to specific members of a kinship group. Size: 3.125" W x 16.875" H (7.9 cm x 42.9 cm); 18.5" H (47 cm) on included custom stand.
