Description:

Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. mid 18th century CE. Finely-delineated in egg tempera, gold leaf, and gesso on wood, an icon depicting the "All Seeing Eye of God" theme, sometimes called "As Seen Through the Eyes of the Lord." This icon depicts God in Heaven watching over the faithful of earth; the overall design is comprised of concentric circles at the center of which is the youthful Christ Emmanuel, flanked by the "Eyes of God" within a red sun-like orb - as Jesus is understood as the "Sun of Righteousness." The face of Mary, the mother of God, is depicted at the top of the circle, and the four Evangelists - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John - are in the other surrounding circles. Three winged seraphim occupy the lateral and bottom sides of the dark, star-adorned rim; all the way at the top is God the Father upon billowing clouds. Size: 8.55" W x 10.375" H (21.7 cm x 26.4 cm).
