Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid to late 19th century CE. A beautiful example of a kris (keris), a traditional Indonesian ceremonial sword. The handle is carved from chestnut-hued wood and boasts a pair of abstract anthropomorphic masks along the interior curve. A small, hemispherical copper guard rests between the handle and the blade guard. The iron blade has a straight, tapering profile with a thick spine along the upper half and displays undulating integral bands of lighter material. The sheath is hand-carved from hard wood with a wide guard protector and a slender profile. The sheath is covered with a removable brass jacket which bears a column of repousse foliate motifs on one side. Size: 20" L x 5.125" W (50.8 cm x 13 cm); length of blade: 14.375" L (36.5 cm).

  • Condition: Very slight bending to blade and sheath jacket, with some fading to finer details, and very minor nicks to blade edges, otherwise intact and very good. Nice patina on brass and wooden elements.
