Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, pre-Classic period, ca. 800 BCE to 100 BCE. A stunning redware teapot - the attractive vessel of a round, ribbed, gourd-like form with a long, flared spout and a high, round bridge handle. The redware surface is finely painted with white curvilinear motifs on the shoulder just beneath the handle, the sinuous forms conjuring serpent imagery. Complementing this are the white striations highlighting the ribs of the gourd-like section of the vessel. A very rare and old example. Size: 8.25" W x 6.75" H (21 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: ex Dr. David Powers collection, Palisades, California, USA; ex-Sid & Addie Newman Collection, collected in 1950s to 1970s prior to 1980
