Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 550 to 100 BCE. A lovely standing "Pretty Lady" with a pregnant belly, voluptuous breasts, and delineated genitalia to emphasize her fertility. Her visage, framed by a centrally parted long coiffure, is quite expressive with large almond-shaped eyes and an open mouth perhaps indicating that she is engaged in song or prayer. She appears nude, though highly decorated with a large pair of round ear ornaments incised with four "T" motifs perhaps representing the cardinal directions, an elaborate necklace, all with incised striations, the earrings and necklace with added red cinnabar. Custom stand. Size: 4.75" H (12.1 cm); 5.5" H (14 cm) on stand

Compare to similar example in "Little People of the Earth, Ceramic Figures from Ancient America" The Denver Art Museum, 1991 exhibition catalogue.

Provenance: private Joseph Ronar collection; Mr. Ronar (1948-1993) was an architect of Montreal Canada
