East Asia, Southern China, Hmong / Miao peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. An impressive vintage torque or collar necklace cast from baitong , the wrapped wire conical button forming a hook and eye clasp. The metal composition: nickel, copper, and zinc is a naturally occurring ore in China that has forms an alloy known as baitong, paktong, or white copper. It closely resembles silver and was first used in China for coinage and jewelry as an alternative to silver. Phoenix birds decorate each side, symbolic of prosperity and renewal, the bird's imagery is commonly found in Miao silverwork. Hefty crescent shaped necklaces like this were used ceremonially, often for weddings and a complete set of jewelry worn at ceremonies and festivals can weigh up to twenty pounds (9 kg). This necklace alone weighs about 3 pounds (1.3 kg). The red wax stamp in the center of the bottom is the original Chinese custom stamp. Size: 4.5" W x 11" Diameter (11.4 cm x 27.9 cm)
