Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. The Mezcala sculptors brilliantly used string-saw technology to skillfully carve representations of human forms and painstakingly delineate limbs and facial features. In this example, the contrast between naturalism in the facial features and the abstract stylized carving of the form itself is quite striking. Note how the artisan captured the soft fleshy tones of the subject's skin, the peaceful expression emoted by his closed eyes and relaxed cheeks and lips. Not to mention how he delineated the quaint positioning of arms held over belly, stylized tapered conical head with parted coiffure, and overall fine form of this standing idol. Custom, museum-quality stand. 5-1/4"T x 2-1/4"W x 1 3/8"D.
