Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. An intriguing seated figure of a characteristically abstract presentation, hand-carved from a mottled grey stone with lighter inclusions. The hunched figure presents with conjoined arms held atop bent knees, and with string-cut grooves delineating the arms, leg, and neck. The triangular head has plateaued brows, slit-form lips, and protruding cheeks, all beneath a tapered brow. A wonderful and early example from the ancient Mezcala! Size: 1.9" L x 1.25" W x 2.7" H (4.8 cm x 3.2 cm x 6.9 cm).

For a stylistically-similar example, please see: Gay, Carlo and Frances Pratt. "Mezcala: Ancient Stone Sculpture from Guerrero Mexico." Balsas Publications, New York, 1992, p. 110, plate 94.
