Description:

Jalisco region of Mexico, ca. 100 BCE to 200 CE. The earthenware figurine depicts a woman wearing an elaborate headdress, necklace, and armbands. Her features are not exaggerated to show some real life deformity; it was simply the style of human sculpture at the time. On this particular piece, you can clearly see the craftsmanship of the sculpture, particularly around the headdress. She would have been fully painted at one time but, like many similar sculptures, much of the paint is gone, although there are several white details that can be seen. Flat human figurines were frequently placed within shaft-and-chamber tombs in Jalisco during this time period; similar figures are often described as having a hieratic style with staring eyes and stiff postures. Dimensions: 1.5" x 3" x 7.5"
