Description:

Oaxaca, Mexico, Manuel Jimenez, "Tigre/Tiger," ca. 1970. This carved wooden tigre (jaguar) was hand-carved and painted by Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (1919-2005), a 20th century Mexican artist credited with originating the Oaxacan version of alebrijes. Alebrijes are in essence animal figures hand-carved from wood and then hand-painted with lively patterns in contrasting bold hues. This example depicting a jaguar is somewhat rare, standing apart from his more colorful alebrijes. One can find Jimenez' creations in both private collections and public institutions, in the United States and throughout the world. Size: 12"L x 4-3/8"H x 2-1/2"W. Provenance: Ex-Historia Gallery, Santa Monica, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #109297
