Description:

Mexico, 19th century. This retablo represents Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos. Pilgrims come to the town to pay homage to the small sculptural representation of the Virgin in her basilica. Comprised of a mixture of corn pith and a glue from the bulbs of an orchid, the actual figure was believed to have been brought from Michoacan in the early 1500s. Miracles have been attributed to this small image beginning in 1623 when a young circus performer who had been accidentally killed was brought back to life. In retablos she is depicted with a white lacy collar and a blue cape with red lining which contrasts nicely with her white dress embroidered with roses. Artists usually do not deviate from these elements in her garments as well as the crown/halo, the two tall candles, and the swags of drapery in retablo art suggesting that they copied the imagery from religious prints. 6.75"W x 10.00"H (17.15 W x 25.40 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Ramon Kelly collection, Denver.
