Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 20th to 21st century CE. A beautiful, handcrafted Tree of Life candle holder, an elaborate type of Mexican pottery sculpture traditional in the central part of the country. Made from terracotta with wire supports, and 4-cylinder tubes on the verso for the candle sticks. Depicted are Adam and Eve holding apples, an angel, and God above, nestled in among animals and flowers - the serpent holding an apple near the lower center. Tree of Life sculptures often depicted the Biblical story of creation and would act as an aid for teaching it to natives during the early colonial period. Size: 9.25" L x 5" W x 16" H (23.5 cm x 12.7 cm x 40.6 cm)
