Latin America, Mexico, ca. early 20th C.A stunning, hand-carved, painted, and gilded santo depicting Nuestra Madre de la Candelaria (this title painted in black at the lower end of the pedestal) or Our Lady of Candelaria, also known as Morenita who originally was the patron saint of the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the southern coast of Morocco, but later adopted by the faithful of New Spain or Mexico. In her left arm, she holds the Christ Child who holds a blue orb adorned with a white cross and makes a blessing gesture with his right hand. The Virgin wears flowing white robes decorated with roses and golden trim, a golden crown, and a radiating golden halo surrounds her visage. At the base of the pedestal the artist, one of the Cortez familySize: 5.5" W x 8.25" H (14 cm x 21 cm)
