Description:

** A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit The Fowler Museum at UCLA **Latin America, Mexico, February, 1925 CE. A lovely retablo hand painted on heavy gauge tin, depicting a three figures (probably a mother, father, and child) praying on their knees to a Crucified Christ and the Virgen of Guadalupe who is surrounded by winged angels. Although the text is difficult to decipher, the date hand written in the upper right of the retablo appears to read February of 1925. The composition provides a few clues as well. Set in an otherwise empty room, which is rendered with a nice attempt at linear perspective (note how the lines of the flooring converge in the distance), is the praying family beside a bed that most likely belongs to someone who has fallen ill, perhaps the kneeling child given that the bed appears to be empty at the moment. A touching and early example! Size: 7" L x 5.25" W (17.8 cm x 13.3 cm)
