Mexico, ca. 1954 CE. This is an oil on tin ex-voto painting dedicated to the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos, a title for the Virgin Mary. She has a shrine dedicated to her at the Basilica Minor of San Juan de los Lagos in Guadalajara, Mexico, and it is one of the most popular Roman Catholic pilgrimage sites in the country. The painting here depicts an ill man sitting up in bed aided by a woman; four other women, some holding candles, are around him in positions of prayer. A beautiful depiction of the statue that rests at the Basilica is painted above that scene in bright blue. The artwork and coloration of this piece is much better than many ex-votos. Paraphrasing, the story this tells is as follows: Senor Pablo Martinez began to feel ill the 10th day of February of this year; he became close to death after suffering from vomiting all night. His family knelt, lit candles, and prayed to the miraculous Lady of San Juan de los Lagos (of the Lakes) to give him relief and save him from death. His wife, Bartola Badillo, along with Edfracia Martinez Badillo, Maria Martinez Badillo, and Reynaldina Martinez Badillo, were all crying. He began to recover around 4 in the morning and was able to make confession. Now, after 33 three days by the grace of God he has returned to health and has completed a promise to prostrate himself before the feet of the miraculous virgin.
