Description:

Latin America, Mexico, Veracruz, ca. 1960. A pair of pendant masks depicting Juan Negro and Panole, the carving on each displays strong technique, and the painted details in black against pink and red hues are fabulously bold. The narrative of the Juan Negro dance tells the story of two men, Panole, the wealthy white Spanish land owner and Juan Negro, the poor black peasant. These men love the same girl, and as one might expect, Panol brandishes his wealth and power to win her affections. However, eventually, the righteous Juan Negro wins his ladylove. Sizes: 8-3/4"L x 6"W x 4-1/2"D (Juan Negro) and 8-3/4" x 5-1/2" x 4"D (Panole). Provenance: Ex-Historia Gallery, Santa Monica, CA; purchased from Jaled Muyaes in the 1980s. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
