Description:

Spanish Colonial, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely, painted wood retablo depicting "La Divina Pastora" (The Divine Shepherdess) in a verdant landscape, surrounded by a flock of sheep. Mary holds the Christ Child as she pets one of these symbolic creatures. As the guardian and defender of these sheep, she represents Mary as the Good Shepherd, protecting them from the evil wolf. Not only does the central painting present such poignant, sacred iconography, but it is also painted in an effective folk art style, with a composition framed by a vibrant border, the periphery integral to the piece with added interior borders at the juncture between frame and image. Size: 17.125" L x 13.5" W (43.5 cm x 34.3 cm)

Provenance: private Andrade collection New York, NY, USA acquired 1960's; ex-Knoedler & Company
