Southern Italy, Messapian Culture, ca. 5th - 4th century BCE. A delicately formed terracotta vessel, with tulip shaped body, flared rim, and thin handle. Vessel is slipped in white and painted with red linear designs. 4-1/2"H. Provenance: Ex-Byron Farwell Collection, acquired in 1944/45 while serving in Southern Italy. Farwell was granted permission to excavate and export an ancient Daunian Necropolis in Ordona, which subsequently turned up a vast collection of pottery. This collection was published by Franklin Johnson in the "Farwell Collection" (1953) and displayed at the University of Chicago. The collection was passed down to his daughter upon his passing. All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids, papered by our parent company, Artemis Gallery Ancient Art. The starting price is the lowest price at which the lot can sell.
