Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumer or Babylon, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A mold-formed terracotta relief plaque of a rough rectangular form with rounded corners. The obverse face depicts a pair of nude figures, one male and one female, engaged in intimate behavior. The woman leans forward with her left leg extended and holding a slender implement to her mouth, and the man is shown grabbing her hips. The scene is colored with pale-orange slip which accentuates the fine figural detailing. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 3.8" W x 4.5" H (9.7 cm x 11.4 cm); 5.3" H (13.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Richard Wagner collection, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in the 1960s

  • Condition: Repaired from a few large pieces with light restoration to obverse details and earthen stabilization material along the verso. Small chips and abrasions to front, figures, peripheries, and verso, with light encrustations, and softening to some finer figural details. Nice earthen deposits and root marks throughout.
