Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 3200 to 1900 BCE. A large terracotta votive figure depicting a mother goddess, an ancient protector deity for mothers and mothers-to-be. Painted in hues of cream and earth, she is seen sitting on an integral base with dangling legs while holding a round bowl with grooved edges in both hands. She sits upright with a ridged back and globular breasts, and her thick neck supports her stylized head. Her visage is comprised of almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and projecting lips, all beneath a headband with hair drawn back into a conical bun. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 1.875" W x 4.75" H (4.8 cm x 12.1 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private east coast of Florida, USA collection, acquired by the present owner during his residence in Paris, France in the 1970s, at Drouot auction
