Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, Third Dynasty of Ur, ca. 2112 to 2004 BCE. A nicely preserved clay tablet with lightly convex faces and rounded peripheries. The obverse bears twenty-five short columns of inscribed cuneiform text arranged in three rows that are formed by impressing a sharpened reed or stick just before being placed inside a kiln. Though untranslated, this tablet perhaps contains inventory lists of various materials used in trading across vast distances, the names of individuals in a given area, or maybe a writing practice for a student just learning the language. Size: 2.9" W x 3" H (7.4 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection, private Dere Family Collection, acquired prior to 1980.
