Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria or Babylon, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A fascinating head of a woman with a dramatic coiffure and large, rounded headdress. Her eyes, eyebrows, and headdress band are colored with a thick, black pigment, while her hair is detailed with striated lines, giving the impression of having been combed backward from her hairline. Her wide eyes are a stylistic choice common in this region, often assumed to mean attentiveness to the gods. This head was once part of a larger votive figure. Size: 2.55" W x 3.5" H (6.5 cm x 8.9 cm); 6.15" H (15.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-William Froelich collection, New York, USA, collected in the 1970s
