Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumeria or Babylon, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. A mold-made plaque with a standing, elaborately dressed figure, probably a king but perhaps a representation of a deity. The figure is shown in profile, striding forward with one foot, and holding some kind of staff, scepter, or possibly weapon. Who is this enigmatic character? Why might he be depicted here? Pottery plaques are one of the lasting art forms from ancient Mesopotamia, and give us a mysterious glimpse into religious practices and what people valued; they were often kept in the home, perhaps on a personal altar. Size: 1.75" W x 3.2" H (4.4 cm x 8.1 cm); 3.5" H (8.9 cm) on included custom stand.
