Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, possibly Babylon, ca. 1600 BCE. This is a terracotta plaque - one of the signature small artifacts of the ancient Near East - that depicts a bearded god in profile, wearing a conical headdress and a long skirt. His feet are bare; his hands are raised to his chest. His visible eye is large and open wide, a characteristic of art from this time and place - throughout the ancient Near East, we believe that wide open eyes symbolized attentiveness to the gods.
