Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 2400 to 2200 BCE. A hand-built pottery donkey standing with fused front and back legs atop an integral ovoid plinth. The beast of burden has a stocky body, a thick tail resting against the hind legs, and a pair of panniers draped over the back. The conical head boasts perky ears, a pointed nose, and concentric circle eyes painted in black. Additional painted linear motifs in black and red hues are strewn across the cream-hued body and makes this a colorful example of ancient Mesopotamian artistry! Size: 2.2" W x 3.4" H (5.6 cm x 8.6 cm).

Provenance: private Vero Beach, Florida, USA collection; ex-private old French collection, acquired in the 1960s
