Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Old Babylonian Period, ca. 1900 to 1700 BCE. A hand-built clay tablet of rectangular form bearing rounded peripheries and gently convex faces. Inscribed across one face are 20 full or partial lines of cuneiform script. Cuneiform tablets like this example provide scholars with insights as to how a structured writing system revolutionized the means of recording information pertaining to countless facets of life, such as worker payment as well as the transportation and distribution of building materials and agricultural goods. While not fully translated, the text of this tablet concerns one individual, perhaps hired, to maintain guard over another individual. Size: 2.2" W x 3.5" H (5.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
