Description:

Ancient Near East, Mesopotamia, Sumer, ca. 3rd millennium BCE. A fascinating marble figure - perhaps a deity or worshipper - standing in a rigid pose with hands clasped at waist as a long robe drapes over their square shoulders, ending at the ankles. Mesopotamians believed that gods were physically present in the materials and experiences of daily life. Cult statues like this example were believed to be inhabited by the deity or human it represented, after they had been animated by the proper rituals, thus worshipper statues would perpetually pray on behalf of their owner. Some statues would be inscribed with the names of rulers and their families, while fragments of worn figures were preserved within the walls of the temple. Size: 3.3" W x 8.2" H (8.4 cm x 20.8 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.
