Description:

Near East, Mesopotamia, ca. 3200 to 2000 BCE. A fascinating rectangular plaque with incised hunting scene; a lion attaching an ungulate such as a gazelle. The etched areas inlaid with black pigment for contrast and this was probably a panel inlay in a larger composition- the incised lines run slightly over the sides. The hunting exploits of kings during this time period are a popular iconographical subject, and hunting seems to have been an important social ritual - acted out in dances and parades, with special game parks and hunting enclosures for the wealthy - for elites in this and other ancient Near Eastern and Central Asian societies. Size: 2.125" L x 1.125" W (5.4 cm x 2.9 cm); 2" H (5.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private prominent Daryl Kulok collection, New York, USA, acquired in Israel in the 2000s
