Ancient Near East, Mesopotamian, ca. 2nd to 1st millennium BCE. An elegant weight carved by hand from semi-translucent alabaster that depicts an abstract duck sleeping with its head turned atop its plump back. The Mesopotamians used sets of standard weights to conduct their business and set rigid penalties against individuals who used false weights. The weights themselves were typically made from harder stones like hematite and marble, but others could be shaped from softer materials like alabaster or calcite. Size: 1.7" L x 0.9" W x 1.375" H (4.3 cm x 2.3 cm x 3.5 cm)

  • Condition: Repair to top of head, with smoothed adhesive material along break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks, with stable fissures along sides and bottom of body, softening to some finer details on head, and some light earthen deposits. Nice preservation to avian form.
