Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Huari / Wari, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. Presenting a mesmerizing decorative program, both modeled in low relief and skillfully painted, a wonderful polychrome terracotta canteen vessel, its ovoid body featuring an ornately embellished central figure on each side with a tumi decorated headdresses and large ear ornaments. To each side of the stylized heads and outstretched bodies of these matching figures are additional figural images including both anthropomorphic and zoomorphic forms. Perched upon the shoulders are petite dog-shaped lugs that are perforated between the front and back legs for suspension or attachment. Throughout the vessel is an extensive program of abstract geometric motifs, and all is handsomely painted in red, tan, and black hues. An impressive piece like this one would have been created as a ceremonial vessel or funerary grave good, probably made to hold some a special libation or offering. Provenance: private Dr. George Wald, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA; acquired in the 1960's. Dr. Wald was a recipient of the 1967 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the retina.
