Description:

Southwestern USA, Colorado, Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloans, ca. 1150 to 1280 CE. A fine example of a pottery bowl with a slightly oblong shape, made in the Mesa Verde Black-on-White tradition in what is today southwestern Colorado. The body is deep, with the interior featuring a complex design in three bands: vertical lines and an abstract lizard; repeated checkerboards; and another abstract lizard motif in tondo. These vessels were made from a gray or white clay with angular fragments of temper and this one has a pearly gray-white slip that was then overpainted with a black pigment made from carbon. These were made by people who lived in cliff dwellings like those seen at Mesa Verde National Park and the geometric motifs on this bowl may relate to the multi-level style of their urban spaces. Size: 9.2" W x 4.4" H (23.4 cm x 11.2 cm)
