Description:

Western Europe, Merovingian, Migration Period/ Dark Ages, ca. 5th to 6th century CE. At the time of the fall of the Roman Empire, other cultures began to evolve, grow and eventually prosper. Although called the Dark Ages, there were still pockets throughout Europe where culture, art and prosperity still thrived. The Merovingians were one such group. Frankish in ethnicity, these people eventually evolved into modern day France. This quite stunning belt buckle comes from this time period and culture. Bronze belt fitting with oval loop, shield-on-tongue buckle and rectangular plate with a glass inlay and additional inlays of golden sheet on the plate and the loop. Held to the leather strap with bronze rivets/ nails, still surviving, this would have been a prized possession of a Frankish lord. Size: 2.125" W x 1.625" H (5.4 cm x 4.1 cm); 2.5" H (6.4 cm) on included custom stand.
